Dear Members of the WFAA Family,
Over the past year, we, as an organization have grown in many ways. Some for the good and some not so good. We learned a few lessons, especially
about politicians. We’ve overcome challenges and were still able to grow our organization. We are still in our infancy and still learning how to “walk”.
We completed another year of identifying and recognizing our distinguished alumni. We constructed a memorial for those alumni who made the
ultimate sacrifice for us. We added to our ever-increasing athletic hall of fame and we honored the first group of our many outstanding educators. We
gave two deserving graduates scholarships and added another few hundred alumni to our rolls. We succeeded in getting recognized as a 501c3 not-
for-profit organization by the IRS. Which, hopefully, would mean more tax-deductible donations to our causes. We have done quite a bit in this past
year it would probably take me all night just to name them all. So where do we go from here?
This year brings a new direction to your organization that the entire board and myself are very excited about. We are planning a direction that
consists of helping current students reach their goals. We want to increase school pride and conceived reputation. As alumni, we want to make
ourselves known in the school and community by attending the many functions already planned by other groups. We will reach out to other
organizations in our community and conduct “joint ventures”. We want to give back to the school and community in ways like collecting prom dresses
for those who can’t afford to purchase a new one, purchase yearbooks and prom tickets and give them to deserving students. Conduct several food
drives throughout the year. Support or create programs that promote school and community pride and use our alumni to deliver that message to our
students.
Our dues structure will change. As of Jan 1, 2011 there will be no dues to become a member. Anyone wishing to become a member must support an
event and donate some time on some of our many initiatives to be granted membership. We feel that more people will feel compelled to join and give
more than the past dues amount. There will be an “associate membership” available for parents of alumni, businesses, organizations, teachers, etc. In
the past, all events were created and set up by all of the board members and some volunteers. With the associate membership, we should be able to
solicit more people to get excited about a certain event and take that ball and run with it. It will give us the opportunity to do even more with the
increase in manpower. Our preliminary calendar looks like this so far. January will start our Valentine’s sales and a food drive. February will continue
our Valentine’s sales and we will be at the faculty music concert. March is the high school fashion show and we will start our prom dress collection.
April will be our distinguished alumni event, spring concerts, earth day and career day. May is a community yard sale, Armed forces memorial
ceremony and our yearbook and prom ticket donations. June is graduation, Music alumni concert, and a Mets and/or Ducks game. July and August are
open. September we are giving out kindergarten packets and the athletic hall of fame game. October will be our homecoming events, outstanding
educators awards dinner and the beginning of our coat drive. November is another food drive and a veteran’s day ceremony. December is William
Floyd’s birthday, our holiday concerts and Adopt-A-Family donations. By the way, many thanks to all who donated to this year’s family. As you can see,
we have a nice package collected to help the family have a merrier Christmas.
We have a lot more to do and to plan for the coming year. We need a lot of help to do what we want to do. We want your comments and feedback.
What do you say - maybe you want to join us?
Sincerely,
Jon J. Geraci Sr.
